The fall cottage closing checklist we actually use

A practical Muskoka cottage closing checklist: water, heat, appliances, docks, and the small steps that prevent spring surprises.

Most spring repair calls trace back to one missed step in the fall. A written checklist, done the same way every year, is the cheapest insurance a cottage can have.

Water first

Shut off the main, drain lines and fixtures, and have a licensed plumber blow out or antifreeze the system where it calls for it. Leave taps open and label everything.

Heat and power

Decide whether the cottage stays heated. If it does, set a safe minimum and add monitoring so you know if the furnace quits. If it does not, unplug appliances and prop open fridge and freezer doors.

Outside

Clear the eavestroughs after the leaves drop, store furniture, pull seasonal dock sections, and secure doors, shutters and outbuildings.

  • Gutters cleared and downspouts flowing
  • Furniture and toys stored
  • Dock sections and ramps out
  • Boats secured or removed
  • Final photo walk-through
